Wolgensinger seems to have been most active as a photographer in the 1950s and 60s. I’m not sure where this was taken; initially I thought somewhere in Mexico or South America, but now I’m thinking maybe somewhere in the vicinity of India. Anyway, I love the simple design painted on the wall behind the kids.
I have found another photograph of this girl, in the same setting and the same session, but portrayed alone (http://www.zaehringer-zuerich.com/wolgensinger-fot.html). It is known as “Mädchen von Konarak” (“Girl form Konarak”). Konarak may refer to various places in Iran (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konarak) but I would bet the picture was taken in the city of Konark (Konarak) in India. A handwritten pencil note on the reverse of the photograph reads: “There were mud huts with paintings close to Konarak that we tried to shoot. This little girl has just taken a bath in a nearby puddle and wanted to go into the hut. Then she stood up, a bit timidly, for a shooting session – and a bit later we were able to photograph the whole family. In February 1958.”
