The Neoclassical era, with its emphasis on mythological subjects, of course rejuvenated interest the story of Cupid and Psyche. Most of these artists portrayed the couple (or Psyche alone, as in our first example) as adolescents:

Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre – Psyche Rescued by Naiads (1750)

Hugh Douglas Hamilton – Cupid and Psyche in the Natural Bower (1792-93)

Francois Pascal Simon Gérard – Psyche Receiving the First Kiss from Cupid (1798)

Jean-Baptiste Greuze – Psyché couronnant l’Amour

Bertel Thorvaldsen – Cupid and Psyche

Jacques-Louis David – Cupid and Psyche (1817)

Artist Unknown – Cupid and Psyche Clock (1800s)
As the Victorian era—with its preoccupation with childhood innocence—was gearing up, Eros and Psyche were often shown younger still:

Mikhail Kozlovski – Psyche (1801)

Étienne Maurice Falconet – L’Amour et Psyché

Étienne Maurice Falconet – Psyché (1)

Étienne Maurice Falconet – Psyché (2)

William Etty – The Marriage of Cupid and Psyche (1820)
