I don’t know much about this artist or his work (except that there seems to be very little of it, which is a shame.) All I know is that when I first encountered this piece on Wikimedia Commons I instantly fell in love with it. I do not believe in perfection, but I would say this piece comes damn near it. From the wonderful attention to anatomical detail, to the soft, ambrosial and distant expression on her face, to the balance between a formal portrait posture and the relaxed, slipped-down posture, to the manner in which her introversion is reflected by the slight defensiveness of her limbs (arm across chest; right leg raised and right foot turned inward), to the elegant but disheveled drapery on which she rests, this sculpture is just exquisite in every way. I think, if I could own one original sculpture of my choosing, this would probably be the one I would choose.

I just found this sculpture on Wikimedia Commons and I’m glad it’s appeared here! (more than a decade ago, even). Pigtails is a wonderful collection…
